Position Overview


The Position

The University of Utah invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science. The Dean will be a tenured professor serving as the College’s chief academic and administrative officer. Duties include oversight of academic programs, fundraising, recruiting/retention of outstanding and diverse faculty, staff, and students; collaborating with other Deans and leaders across colleges; and communicating within the University, and to the community-at-large, the goals and achievements of the College and the importance of social and behavioral science in a dynamic and changing society. The research and teaching of the College reflect this approach towards confronting society’s grand challenges, including embracing the promotion of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Dean will serve a five-year renewable term and will report to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The University of Utah seeks a dynamic academic administrator with proven ability to lead academic departments who embodies a philosophy that embraces and supports students of all backgrounds in the rapidly changing world of higher education.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as chief academic officer of the College;
  • Provide leadership for strategic planning, including developing and enhancing the College’s academic programs;
  • Oversee College advancement, including development, marketing and communications, donor cultivation and fundraising, and alumni relations;
  • Recruit outstanding, inquisitive, and diverse students to the CSBS, facilitating equitable and just access to degree programs for all students, continuing and expanding the growth in enrollments and interest in the College’s majors and programs;
  • Oversee recruitment, supervision, professional development, and retention of strong and diverse faculty and staff;
  • Promote an environment where equity, diversity, and justice are fostered accountably throughout the teaching, research, and service activities of the College;
  • Ensure continued accreditation and state approvals;
  • Support faculty research and the related development required to ensure continued, strong contributions in this area;
  • Promote and facilitate interdisciplinary programming and collaboration between the disciplines of social and behavioral sciences within the College and between CSBS and the broader University;
  • Manage College budget, course scheduling, and staff;
  • Participate in University governance, including service on standing and ad hoc committees, and represent the College to external constituencies.

Qualifications

Candidates for consideration must possess:

  • A Ph.D. in a discipline related to one of the College of Social and Behavioral Science programs;
  • Academic/scholarly experience that qualifies them for tenure in one of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences departments;
  • A record of significant achievement in leadership, scholarly activities, and administration;
  • A philosophy, vision, and record that reflect a commitment to innovative and effective education, equity, diversity, multicultural perspectives, and teaching/learning in multiple contexts;
  • Excellent communication skills, as well as an ability to collaborate and communicate across campus, community, and government entities in ways that facilitate awareness and excitement about the College.

The successful candidate will provide an application package that also describes their successful record with/commitment to:

  • Shared governance, transparency, and open communication;
  • Valuing, promoting, and facilitating interdisciplinary programming and collaboration within a College that integrates a unique set of disciplines, requiring new ways of thinking and connecting;
  • Overseeing growth and development in academic programming, including the promotion of innovative and best practice educational delivery models and processes;
  • Managing diverse academic units, including identifying, recruiting, and retaining distinguished and diverse faculty;
  • Developing and deploying strategic initiatives to advance high-quality research and research funding;
  • Managing financial resources/budgets and developing forward-thinking strategies for identifying new sources of revenue and fundraising;
  • Attracting significant philanthropic investments in the academic enterprise;
  • Advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education.

The College of Social and Behavioral Science

The College of Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS) is focused on a mission to inspire solutions to today’s grand challenges by promoting new ways of thinking and a cross-disciplinary perspective. It is the largest college on campus, with an operating budget over $36 million plus approximately $11 million in grants managed. Each semester, almost 3,500 students choose to focus their studies within the College, selecting from 11 majors and 11 minors, and 25% of the University’s diplomas are conferred from CSBS, annually. Graduate students number approximately 480 and have matriculated into one of 11 masters and 6 doctoral programs.

The CSBS is home to some of the world's greatest thinkers and academic minds. College faculty consist of a collection of tireless individuals who excel at both teaching and researching in their respective disciplines. These individuals are continually recognized for their dedication and mentoring both in and out of the classroom. CSBS trains students to understand that human solutions involve an understanding of the economic, political, and cultural conditions that influence human thought and behavior through its:

  • Seven departments: Anthropology; Economics; Family and Consumer Studies; Geography; Political Science; Psychology; and Sociology;
  • Three public affairs programs: Master of Public Administration; Master of Public Policy; and the Master of International Affairs and Global Enterprise;
  • Two interdisciplinary programs: Environmental and Sustainability Studies and Health, Society, and Policy;
  • Six interdisciplinary centers: The Office of Research Administration; the Archaeological Center; the Center for Natural & Technological Hazards; Child & Family Development Center; the Digit Laboratory; the Behavioral Health Innovation and Dissemination Center; the Barbara & Norman Tanner Center for Human Rights; and the Interdisciplinary Exchange for Utah Science (NEXUS);
  • ROTC programs in Aerospace, Military and Naval Sciences.

CSBS champions active collaboration involving a community of faculty scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, community partners, and policymakers who tackle today’s challenges from an integrated and interdisciplinary approach through creating cutting-edge research involving faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This community provides innovative, active teaching and instruction in the classroom that connects the CSBS disciplines for students; and disseminates research that translates knowledge into real solutions that address today’s challenges.
